  • House Made of Dawn, N. Scott Momoday
    • Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a Native American man returning from World War II to find himself living both inside and outside of "mainstream" society. Having grown up on the reservation, he later attends and teaches at major universities.

  • The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration, Isabel Wilkerson
    • The story of the decades-long migration of African Americans leading the South in search of better lives in northern and western cities.

  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rebecca Skloot
    • This is the story of the immortal cell line known as HeLa that came from Henrietta Lack's cervical cancer cells in 1951. The author examines how those cells serve as the foundation of much of today's understanding of cancer and other diseases and explores the ethical issues of race and class posed by medical research practices.

  • Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? Beverly Daniel Tatum, PhD. 
    • 1997 book updated in 2017 and widely used in college and high school classrooms nationwide to prompt healthy discussions among young people about race.
